Why I Created GiftHub

The Only Problem With Special Occasions

Special occasions (involving gifts) are wonderful and fun. But usually there's a question I dread during the wind-up period just before it arrives: What do you want for your birthday? Or Christmas? or whatever. Ever since I was young this was the hardest question for me to answer. Not only is it hard to remember those things you want, but you also have to play a memory game with yourself if multiple people ask you the same question. Finally, if someone asks you what you want, where's the surprise? Where's the mystery? That's no fun. Now that I'm a little older and have some programming skills, I've decided to finally tackle this issue.

GiftHub: The Solution

Problem one: I forget what I want when it's actually relevant. If you're anything like me, you see things all the time at stores or on ads and think to yourself "that looks sweet, I'd love to have one of those". And then 2 minutes later you've already forgotten all about it. I'm willing to bet I'm not the only person in the world with the memory of a goldfish. GiftHub helps you remember the things you want most. Now, when I see something that looks cool, I'll add a link to it on my GiftHub wish list. My family and friends are my friends on GiftHub, so now when a birthday or Christmas (or the urge to just buy me something nice) rolls around, they pull up my list, buy something they know I'll love, and boom, done. No questions asked, no awkward conversations, no doubting their gift giving abilities. And vice versa, I don't have to ask any of them what they want either, I just pull up their list, choose something nice, and done. Problem solved.

Problem two: Collaboration. Say my birthday rolls around and my mom asks me what I'd like. I say something like "a new board game". Later, my wife or dad or sibling or mother-in-law ask me the same question. Do I have to give them all a different answer? I was lucky enough to know one thing I wanted, now I need to remember 5? And I need to remember who I told what to? Of course not, now I just use GiftHub. GiftHub facilitates any collaboration needed. When you create a wish list and share it with friends, they all see the same list. One person can 'reserve' an item through the app and other people will know it is spoken for. Nobody gets duplicate gifts and no more memory games.

Problem three: No element of surprise. So if people can reserve an item from your list, doesn't that ruin the surprise? Actually, no. Every wish list has a setting, you can choose to keep reservations on your own list hidden from you. Or you can choose to keep the reserver's name anonymous. So you know somebody reserved an item, but not who or you know nothing at all (which is how I prefer it). That way, GiftHub retains the mystery and fun of gift giving as well.
